J6 Prosecutions: A Survey of Commonly Charged Statutes, Legal Challenges, and the Ethics of Politically Charged Criminal Cases
June 20, 2024 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
$25.00Dear FCLC Members and Supporters,
The Federal Criminal Law Committee for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is pleased to announce its next meeting and CLE program on Thursday, June 20, 2024, beginning at 12:00 pm. Angie Halim, Esq. and Rocco Cipparone, Esq. will present a lively panel discussion on commonly charged statutes stemming from the unprecedented Capitol protests and riots on January 6, 2021, as well as legal challenges at trial and sentencing and where they stand following numerous appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. They will provide an overview of Fischer v. United States, argued before the Supreme Court on April 16, 2024, addressing the scope and limits of 18 U.S.C. § 1512(c) which prohibits obstruction of congressional inquiries. Our panelists will also discuss the ethics of prosecutorial charging decisions and defense advocacy in politically charged criminal cases and a lawyer’s duties under the Rules of Professional Conduct when a client’s preferred defense is at odds with legal realities.
The panel will include:
- Angie Halim, Esq., Solo Practitioner, and
- Rocco C. Cipparone, Esq., The Law Offices of Rocco C. Cipparone, Jr.
Angie and Rocco are both experienced federal criminal defense trial lawyers and Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Each has tried multiple J6 cases in the District of D.C., experiences yielding interesting observations and insights on the unique dynamics of these cases.
